I got a juniper bonsai which came in a stone rectangular pot with no drainage hole and rocks that are basically glued together on one side so it’s difficult to remove the tree. I’m wondering how long it can last in there. It also concerns me that there is no drainage hole so I can’t tell how much water it is getting or needs… I think it should be removed somehow, but is it worth the risk? It’s not doing so well right now so I’m going to move it to more light.. worried I’m giving it too much water because I’m overreacting to drying needles :/

    I am not an expert so hopefully someone with more experienced will chime in. I would get that dude out. It’s my understanding glue rocks are baaaaad. That plus no drainage make for poor prospects for the plant. If you like the pot, you can drill holes. Or use it as a cachepot. Junipers pretty much need to be in direct sun. It’s unlikely they would survive indoors. If you need information on repotting and/or care check out Herons Bonsai or The Bonsai Supply on YouTube. They provide good info and have totally different takes on the process. And I love the cow!

      Thank you for the thoughtful response… that makes sense; I will try to get it out of the pot soon before summer is over. It has actually lived inside for 1.5 years in very good health in an east or north facing window, only now did it get some dry tips, but I know that “real” bonsai is outdoors. I worry that if I put it out now it would be too much of a shock to the system. Maybe it would like the fall weather, but I doubt it would like the hot and humid weather right now, a big change. Thoughts? Also any suggestions in where to buy a less expensive bonsai pot?

      If it’s lasted this long inside, I’d leave it indoors. Most of my plants appreciate the ac over Texas heat. And I agree that repotting and moving at the same time would be a lot for it to adjust to. The pot is a good question. The only inexpensive ones I’ve seen are plastic training pots.
