This is a pink azalea bonsai I got for Christmas last year. It did fine for about a week. It’s been struggling since then, it has turned brown and gotten brittle and sickly. I have tried many arrays of plant apps or ai solutions and none have worked, I believe it’s under-watered. Does anyone have ideas of a solution? I have tried watering it a lot more, and watering it a lot less, I recently moved it to a room where it gets less direct light. It’s too soon to tell if that has helped, these are all the things I’ve tried.

    Azalea really should be outside for the most success; have you tried using grow lights on a timer? Also what soil mix are you using?

      I could look into getting a grow light. Where I live it’s too cold for me to feel comfortable leaving it outside. I don’t know what soil it uses, I’m too scared to repot it. I’m worried if I mess up the repot it would be too much stress on it.

    Start with more light, and try to give it consistent conditions for a while. Changing things too quickly or too frequently can stress any plant. As for soil, bonsai need good drainage. Bonsai specific soil is a mix of like potting soil, clay, and akadama (a type of small gravel). If your local shops don't stock that, I've found a mix of about 2/3 potting soil and 1/3 cactus soil works well. I'd let it recover for a while before repotting

      Alright, I have a akadama based soil already but I’ve gotten a growth light in the works, if it continues to improve I’ll let you know.

    Definitely start with more, consistent light like Wasp said. And maybe late fall/early winter, if you can easily slip it out of its current pot, get it some better draining soil. Peat moss is also a great thing to add to most any soil mix, but azaleas love peat. You got this!

    Sadly many bonsai are shipped from china and are in a dark shipping container for a couple months. But this one is save able start watering more it looks under watered check the soil is it clumped together repot if it is. If your bonsai soil does not drain quickly it needs repotted.
