Lighting question: This is my plant corner at work. I bought an LED floor lamp to put in the corner, but it broke during placement (it was, after all, $15). What do you recommend I use as an additional light source? The overhead lights are motion activated, so when no one is here, these three little lights are all my plants have. No windows. I’d also like to bring in more plants, once I can provide more light.
What kind of pots are y’all using when your plants are in bigger pots? I’m a fan of terracotta and pretty much everything is currently in terracotta pots, but I have two that are in 8” terracotta pots with roots poking out the drainage hole. And probably two more that’ll be doing the same by the end of summer. They’re definitely ready to go bigger but the price of larger terracotta is crazy. (Also one is on a moss pole so that probably doesn’t help) I can’t believe how quick the price jumps up in one size difference! What are you guys using? Where are you shopping?
Passing on some fertilizer knowledge I got from a plant guy at Armstrong; I have been using miracle grow indoor outdoor potted plants fertilizer pump for months and it’s been amazing! No plant burn, no bad smell, no dripping. I ran out and went to Armstrong they didn’t have any of that kind but I was looking at all the “specialty” fertilizers for succulents, indoor blooming vs indoor foliage, lucky bamboo specific, African violet specific, etc. I figured I was inexperienced in plant care and a “bad” plant mom using a one size fits all approach so I went to buy one of each! The cashier asked me why I was buying so many, I told him my assumption and he asked how all my plants were doing with my current fertilizer-amazing no problems. He said DONT FIX WHATS NOT BROKEN most of these bottles are just marketing, difference in chemical analysis on the bottles can be really tiny and you “lose” 1/2 your fertilizer out the bottom of your pot anyway so don’t worry so much. I only bought orchid food for my air plant because I was scared to fertilize that one for the first time with the pump fertilizer. Just so y’all know💕

Hi Plant Parents! I’m giving houseplant care another shot and I recently ordered the following starter plants: Calathea Ornata Philodendron Dark Form Gloriosum String of Coins Calathea Fasciata “rotundifolia” Tradescantia Nanouk “Wandering Jew/Dude” Philodendron Prince of Orange My question: While I wait for my plants to arrive, I want to set up a space for them. I'm looking for advice on plant stands, hanging pots/shelves, grow lights, and humidifiers. Any recommendations or tips on these, as well as other essentials like soil mix, pest treatments, and tools, would be much appreciated! I've done some research but would love to hear your suggestions, especially if you have photos or videos for inspiration. A bit more context: I’m in Northern Colorado, where it's quite dry with limited humidity, especially in winter. The plants will mainly be in my bedroom, which has two large south-facing windows with indirect light. They can also spend some time on my south-facing, indirect light balcony during the summer. I don’t have any windows in my bathroom but I’ve heard that some plants do well in bathrooms. I have a cat who has shown some interest in plants in the past, so I need keep most of these out of her reach. She's not a big jumper or climber but could get curious if plants are within her reach. I’d love any tips or advice as I dive into this new ish hobby! I know I’ve chosen some not-so-beginner-friendly plants, but I'm excited to learn. Thanks in advance!
For those of you that make your own chunky soil mixes…. What do you use? I’ve just been using an indoor soil potting mix I get at Walmart but I’ve been wanting to try something new when it comes time to repot some of my babies or as I get new plants.
Priceless ($6 for 40, actually). Gross that I had around 40 gnats floating around. I’m also making tea from Mosquito Bits. Apparently, it wasn’t enough.
Hi everyone! So this parlor palm (from IKEA of all places) is my newest addition to my plant fam and I’m using the Miracle Gro cactus, palm, and citrus soil.. I repotted it into this tall pot here for it to remain outside on my balcony. I read online if you have a tall pot you can put lava rock at the bottom, cover with landscape fabric, and put soil in as normal so it can remain well-draining… on to my issue.. I went to water it this morning and the soil seemed to repel the water like it was hydrophobic and I get the sense that it’s not draining down to the roots… any thoughts or anyone who has dealt with hydrophobic soil? Thank you!!
COVER POT TALK - I don’t know about you all, but I’ve been running out of cover pots 🪴this growing season! As you all know the cost can add up $$$ quickly. I like to wait and buy pots that are interesting to look at and leave my plants in the nursery pot until I find just the right one. In the interim I use large ribbon or peel and stick wallpaper/shelving paper around the pot to dress it up a bit. When it’s one or two plants it doesn’t bother me but this year I have many naked plants!!! I found a set of 3 pots on Amazon that I wanted to share with you all because I thought they were a decent price. You get three 5/6/7 in ceramic pots for $26. I realize I could have thrifted some but these were the exact sizes I needed and the neutral tones match perfectly with what already have. I bought two sets that I can now rotate in and out as needed. Michael’s (with there frequent sales) and World Market are my two other spots I find interesting pots
Thoughts on using this for a highly variegated albo monstera? and my thai constellation and snow queen pothos? the albo is a very small, mid cutting. worried too much light might dry it out or burn but at the same time, too much white means there’s less leaf to photosynthesise...
I watched a YouTube video today that said water conditioner for fish can make tap water safe for plants, too. Have you tried this? Would you agree? I spend about $40/month on distilled water, so I’m open to an easier and more cost-effective option, if it really is just as good for my plants. That being said, I’d probably still water my most finicky plant friends (spider plants, rattlesnakes, & stromanthe triostar) with distilled.
Any ideas on how to protect them from a windy thunder storm? Netting? Cones? Thank you!!

Newbie! Planta recommends liquid fertilizer but in my new plant mom era that I am in I got pellets before reading about liquid. Is there a major difference? The app won’t even allow me to select pellets, so I’m not sure I’m on the right fertilizing schedule. Input?? Thanks!

Please drop fertilizer recommendations in the comments!! Most of my plants are either tropical or cacti/succulents! I’ve been a plant mom for awhile, but haven’t gotten into fertilizer much… my plants are *fine* without it, but I think they’d grow even more beautifully with it! (Correct me if I’m wrong in that statement/if you regret fertilizing) I’d like something easy, non pest attracting, multipurpose, and preferably something that follows a schedule similar to a watering schedule since I don’t have Planta premium! Thanks!
I have to buy some all-purpose potting mix for a few of my indoor houseplants that I’m planning to repot: 2 peperomias and 2 Hostas. Does anyone have any brand recommendations? I’ve heard that I should avoid Miracle Grow, and I’ve seen good reviews on FoxFarm’s soil, but the only brand I can vouch for is Espoma for their succulent soil, and I’m new to foliage plants, so I have yet to try any all-purpose potting mixes. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I have a question about when I add a plant in the planta app and it asks about the size of the pot it is in, does it mean the length of the pot or the depth?
