I recently purchased blueberry, raspberry and strawberry plants. I will be putting them in large pots rather than planting them in the ground because I rent and want to take them with me whenever I move. I’d love ANY and ALL recommendations on pots, soil, fertilizers, etc. I have done a lot of research online, but thought all of you may have some suggestions and insight. Thanks!
First recommendation is to be sure you have two blueberry plants as they do not self pollinate. You may get a few berries from bees and butterflies that just happened to find another blueberry bush in the area, but you will be much happier with your harvest if you start with two. Second piece of advice is do not allow your strawberries to fruit their first year. You should pinch all flowers and runners and let their roots spend a season getting established. Season two you should have loads of berries and plenty of runners to help establish new plants. This is definitely an exercise in patience but well worth it. I don’t have much advice for raspberries as I have a single plant that is just a year old and is still trying to get established so isn’t producing much. Just know that Raspberry bushes do not like as much sun as the other types of berries. If you want a no fail fruit stick a blackberry cane in a pot as well (go for a thornless variety!) Most blackberries will take two years for fruit as first year canes (prima canes) dont fruit (blooms show on second year flora canes). If you can get your hands on PrimeArk variety that is a hybrid that actually does produce fruit on both the prima AND flora canes.
