Brand new plant dad here! What equipment and materials are must haves, for keeping my new babies alive? Thank you in advance!

    Research the plants’ light and water requirements. Learn to check the soil to see when to water. I use a popsicle stick or a chopstick. Use the Planta reminders as reminders to check your plants, not as a strict schedule. (You can also customize the watering reminder frequency in the app.) Underwatering is generally better than overwatering. But plants use more water when they have more light & more roots. Most plants are pretty resilient, so even if you think you killed them, you can usually bring them back. It’s a learning process. So you will make mistakes, and it’s ok 😊

      exactly! watering plants on a schedule can be risky since plants are constantly changing how much water is used in a day. under watering is generally better since over watering can lead to root rot, which i think is the #1 cause of death for houseplants. however, severe under watering can cause dry rot, so it’s all about balance.

      I forgot to mention, I also learned ALOT from watching plant influencers on Instagram. Everyone does things slightly differently, so it helps you figure out what works best for you in your space. But don’t feel like you need to buy everything they use. You don’t need to buy a ton of equipment or expensive tools & supplies when you are just starting out. You can get along just fine without them to start. And then over time you’ll figure out what is worth spending money on, and what you can do without.

    get some soil media or ingredients so you can repot your babies in spring. i like repotme and sol soils’ ingredients but repotme especially has awesome premixed media. look into what kinds of soil each plant prefers. tropicals usually like an airy well draining soil composed of even amounts of bark, grit, and a moisture retentive element like coco coir and worm castings. you might want to get some bigger pots if they look rootbound (check the drainage holes for roots), and you’ll need a watering can of some sort and fertilizer eventually.

    I got advice to use a water meter to check if they need to be watered also being new to indoor plants it’s helped me a lot! I probably would have over watered some of mine without it.

      moisture meters don’t actually measure the level of moisture in the soil, but rather its conductivity. water is very conductive but not the only factor that affects the conductivity of the soil, there are others like metal content of the media and air pockets that will resist conduction. a bamboo skewer or your fingers are far more accurate than moisture meters. i know a few plant parents who’ve even killed plants relying on a $12 moisture meter.

    Moisture meter, light meter, and hygrometer are my recommendations. At the very minimum a moisture meter to prevent over/under watering.
