Made my first potting mix today!! - 4 dehydrated blocks coco coir - 8qt bag perlite - 4qt bag organic worm castings Now I wait for my husband to get home so I can get this out of the bath tub😀 I wanted to add some orchid bark to make it a bit chunkier, but they were out of stock
I’ve been having a problem finding the #4 big chunky perlite too. Shipping is expensive. I asked at a local garden center yesterday and they said they’d order it! You might want to try asking your local place and at least beat the shipping.

this soil looks too dense for houseplants, i’d recommend mixing in some more chunky amendments like coarse perlite, pumice, and orchid bark before using it

I agree w this comment. It will retain too much water. U want less soil more of the other stuff. I also add moss to mine besides the bark, perlite and worm castings. Ud think it would keep it damp but it doesn’t
좋아요 1개 Yes this is what I planned to do. They didn’t have the orchid bark at the store I went to, so I had to order online. This was also take right after I rehydrated the coco coir so it was very moist and dense. Now that its dried out for a few days its much lighter and I will be adding orchid bark when it arrives

Heres a tip, if you can’t get chunky perlite or large orchid bark chunks, use leca! I mix leca into my soil and the plants love it. For my plants that need more air (like alocasia) i add leca, perlite, bark, charcoal, and every other soil amendment i have. The mix you currently have may need some more air. Its quite dense

To add one more thing to the list haha, I try to use pumice instead of Pearlite ONLY for the reason that pearlite floats and it looks exactly like the mealy bugs I fought for two months. Just throwing this out if you think “yeah, pumice sounds interesting.” This specific size is what I use.
