I am new to the plant world. What soil do you guys use and if you make your own soil what do you use and how do you store it so it doesn’t dry out?

    I agree with urban plant mama. I would suggest hopping on YouTube and watching some people (Crazy Plant Guy and Planterina come to mind). When I was first starting, it was a bit overwhelming. Initially I would just google the plant and make some mix. Then I found that “most” of my houseplants (nothing exotic or too hard) like similar soils. So I landed on one kind of mix. Sometimes I also play around with other mixes (Sol Soils and Oh Happy Plants) to see if plants do better. As far as storage goes, I don’t mix much more than I need. All the different things I need to create soils are kept in a large air tight container that lives in my garage.

    I make my mixes as I need them based on the type of plant. I keep the different supplies in this shelf I got from ikea. I never care if it drys out.

    I agree with Aime, YouTube has taught me so much. Plantarina has great videos on how to mix soil on your own and tips. Her basic mix is soil, perlite and worm castings. Also, Aloha Plant life has a bunch of videos for beginners on choosing the right soil mix and light for your plants. I love Wild Fern’s channel, she mixes her own but also will buy premixed and review it. That is how I found Mollys mix which I love for my tropical plants. Premixed premium soil is $$$ but I think it’s worth it if you don’t want to deal with mixing and don’t have the space to store all the supplies. If I had Cherry’s set up I’d probably mix my own.

      My local plant shops have also started bagging up what they use. So I play around with that as well. There’s so much info out there. I can’t keep it all in my brain. Sometimes I think o have too many (around 30) but then I see people here have HUNDREDS! 😂. How?! 😊😍
