Hello everyone!! I just received a huge monstera as a gift. (My first one) I am very worried about it and am not familiar with taking care of this plant yet. I’m worried I repotted it a little crooked and that it may need to be split into separate plants. Any advice?
Congrats on getting your first monstera! She’s huge! First off, great job on knowing that you may have to split it up, as there are actually multiple monsteras in there. What kind of soil did you use? These plants love an airy mix because they are prone to root rot. However, there are plenty of varieties out there, just look for soil specifically made for aroids. Companies charge a bunch, but you can honestly make it at home. It’s more expensive to buy the material separately, but in turn, you’re saving so much money in the long run. What I’d do at this point is let it acclimate to your living space. I know it’s hard, but at least 1 month is good. Also, if you watered already, don’t water her until the month is over. Don’t worry, these plants don’t mind it. They actually like it! Oh, they also like sun! The more the sun, the more the fenestrations! Feel free to stagger on purchasing the materials instead of all at once. Plus that’ll give you an excuse to go to the plant store 😉 This is all the advice I have for now, but there’s a guy on YT called KillThisPlant (lol) and he has a whole series on how to care for these fun plants. 1 like Oh, I forgot to mention, the Velcro ties are keeping the leaves from moving towards light, they should be wrapped (not too tightly) around the stem.
I purchased an organic cactus and succulent soil and I did mix in some perlite as well. Thank you soo much for taking the time to give me some information!!! I’m just so nervous I feel like I have a child now 🤣
1 like Sooo relatable! When I come home from work, I go to my plants and say, “Hey, girls!” 😂 & you’re so very welcome, it’s my pleasure. It feels amazing to share the knowledge I’ve learned along the way. We all start somewhere. 😊 Your soil and perlite is great! If I’m not mistaken, cactus/succulent soil dries out faster, so I think watering day would come around sooner. If I may add, coconut husks and orchid bark (not medium, but fine) and don’t forget to soak the bark before using. So excited for you!
2 likes This is how the soil looks for my monsteras. Also, it’s hard to find coco husks where I live because they usually sell it in a brick form and I’m not doing all that LOL Luckily, there’s a good alternative found at PetSmart 😂 I literally bought another bag today since I’ll be running out soon lol

1 like I’d wait a while, let the plant get acclimated first. Since you’re using the cactus/succulent soil, maybe around the 3 week mark should do. Until then, it’ll just be chillin’ in its new home 😎
