Okay the thing I’ve been terrified of doing…. I need to repot and separate my monstera tomorrow. Please please give me all your tips and advice in preparation.

    I repotted by big monster about three years ago now. I disturbed the roots A LOT and rearranged her nicely in the pot. Took me hours. Afterwords, my plant went dormant for almost a year. Pretty sure i shocked her 😔 My tips: 1. Repot your monstera when you either see it has about as many roots as it has soil. Yours is in a clear pot. If it wasn’t, you’d know cuz you’d be watering at almost twice the regular frequency. I think of repotting like getting a new shoe size. We only size up shoes when the old ones are too tight 2. Don’t over manipulate the roots. Plants are good at rooting. They’re good at growing. Most are not good at doing both at the same time. 3. I only plop and drop to repot now. 10 minutes and I’m DONE 4. Angle your plant (and stakes) slightly backward when you repot to help the plant be less top heavy. These guys are pretty phototropic anyway. They’ll adjust quickly! 5. Repot when the plant is pretty dry and that should make it easier to separate her. Have a plan of action as to where you’re going to separate beforehand so you don’t shock the plant. Are you going to cut the roots or pull her apart? Those stems look really close together meaning the roots might be rather intertwined

    My main reason for repotting is to separate it as they’re is definitely more than one plant in there and I don’t want to repot before it gets too full and give it the best chance through the winter months. I also need to add a better stake into her as she’s only on the small plastic ones that came with her and they’re slowly bending from her weight.

      First off, congratulations on the Monstera Monday (or Tuesday) repot! 😂💚 My biggest tip: have EVERYTHING ready before you start, especially since you’re separating her. Pots, soil, supports, ties, scissors — all of it. Take your time untangling the roots and don’t force them apart. If a few roots break, don’t panic. And I’d decide ahead of time how many plants you actually want to separate her into so you’re not making that decision mid-repot 😅

      Thank you ☺️ Don’t know why I’m so nervous about it… think it’s because she is one day going to be a big girl. Bit like giving birth I suppose 😂

    Someone gave the advice to keep them dry beforehand but I would recommend instead watering a day or two before since your separating, it will be easier to remove soil unlike if you weren’t separating dry would be helpful. But a good water before gives the plant more of a chance of surviving the separation because the plant is hydrated and soil more easily moved 🌱

    I just personally did this with 4 in 1 pot and my biggest fear was hurting the plant or being too rough. In the end, my biggest tips are -don’t be afraid to lose up to 35% of the roots from each plant -hydrate the roots by soaking the entire root ball underwater for an hour (if you have time) -grab the monsteras by the bases of the stems and gently but firmly pull/wiggle them apart

    When I repotted mine the first time, I had 5 plants to untangle. I just did it slowly, gently and methodically like untangling yarn (if you’re a knitter) and watched a show while I did it so I wouldn’t get bored and rush. It took me at least an hour to do, but I lost very few roots this way and all of the plants grew so fast that I had to give some away soon after because I ran out of space.
