Hi monstera friends! Need some help! I have one big leaf about to unfurl, so I think I am doing something right. However, I have two small leaves that are turning yellow. I had two other small leaves turn completely yellow and they died. I am wondering if this means it is overwatered? But I am pretty sure it’s not. I let it drain. Then, I am finding small bugs in it. I assume they are gnats? I sprayed a mixture of dish soap, water, and peppermint oil, but still finding these little flying insects. Any advice helps!!!

it’s almost definitely just the natural end of the road for those baby leaves — no worries!

The bugs are a concern - what do they look like? Are they what’s in the photo I attached? If so, those are fungus gnats. Buy yellow sticky traps for the adults and get Mosquito bits for the larva. The adults are merely irritating but the larva eat plant roots.

Cool, so, you are now at war. Good news is fungus gnats don’t kill plants super quickly so if you get on it now, it should be fine. My advice would be not to mess around with neem oil etc. Buy Mosquito Bits and water every plant with water that contains it, for the foreseeable future. Fungus gnats like to travel so don’t just treat one plant. Also every plant (EVERY plant) needs a sticky yellow trap attached to it (side of pot or soil). That way, you’re attacking the adults and the larva. Oh I also had a couple of plants that were more badly affected. I repotted those in new soil, decontaminated the pots and thoroughly washed their roots as part of the process.

Thank you for the advice! I did buy neem oil, I’ll buy some mosquito bits. Anything wrong with neem oil?

Nothing wrong with neem oil per se - I just find that it doesn’t work and also it clogs up my mister.

It’s fungus gnat season 🤷 Momo’s advice is the same I’d give (except i don’t use the sticky traps because i don’t want to look at them lol) If it gets worse or stays bad, you’ll need to address the soil. It could be that it’s just hanging onto water longer than it should, inviting gnats to breed

I hate looking at them too, but I hate the gnats more 😂 Totally agree re the soil. I repotted most of my plants into an airier mixture (mostly have aroids) which has the benefit of less gnats and also new growth. I also moved most of them into terracotta. It means more frequent watering which is boring, but nothing is holding on to water for too long. Worth a shot for bad infestations - we moved house and are now next to a park with a big, moist pond area, so it’s a constant battle.
