The answer is pot size. Monsteras will fill their pot with roots before they start producing leaf after leaf. Make sure your Monstera doesnt get repotted more than every 18 months, and when you do, choose a pot only 1 to 2 inches bigger to promote new leaves with the perfect "Swiss Cheese" look! Use Monstera fertilizer every 14 days(a 3-2-1).

To encourage your friend’s Monstera to produce more fenestrations (the splits and holes in the leaves), they can try these tips: 1. Increase Light Exposure: The more light the Monstera receives, the more fenestrated its leaves tend to become. Bright, indirect light is ideal, so placing the plant near a window or using a grow light can help boost fenestration. 2. Regular Feeding: Fertilize the plant with a balanced houseplant fertilizer during the growing season (spring to early fall). This will give the plant nutrients to support the growth of larger, fenestrated leaves. 3. Encourage Climbing: Monsteras are climbing plants and produce more fenestrations when they grow vertically. Providing a moss pole, trellis, or other support for the plant to climb will often encourage more mature growth with fenestrations. 4. Consistent Care and Pruning: Pruning any leggy or damaged growth encourages the plant to put more energy into producing new, healthy leaves. Maintaining a consistent watering and humidity routine will also support better leaf development. With a bit of time and these care adjustments, the plant should eventually produce more leaves with fenestrations!
