I bought a giant… help! So … I went into my local plant shop looking for something else… and this was there. I have a loyalty card with them and had £30 of points so she only cost £50 - how could I say no?! Now she’s here I feel a bit intimidated. I want to repot her (once she’s settled) into a very slightly larger terracotta pot and also change out the soil as it’s OK but not the chunky mix that I prefer. Oh, and I don’t like coco coir poles so would want to swap that out! Usually I’d just do this but she’s an established plant and clearly happy where she is. Should I just leave well enough alone and make changes in Spring as needed? Any thoughts very welcome. I already have a good-sized monstera that I’ve grown from small, and a Thai Con, so I generally know what I’m doing but her size is making me second-guess myself?!

Just out of curiosity, what does the pole do? I just got a Monstera and just starting to take being a plant mom seriously 😅

Monsteras are climbers - in the wild they would climb trees, so the moss pole gives them something to grow up and supports their growth. As well as something for the arial roots to grip into. Without a pole, you’ll generally see a very limp looking plant

Oh, that’s very interesting. I’d have never thought they were climbers. Guess I’ll have to find a pole for mine. Thank you so much!

I would leave it alone until Spring because it’s still putting out new leaves and the light green ones haven’t hardened yet! However, if it’s really root bound— you could repot after the new growth has lapsed. I would suggest watering it with fertilizer immediately if you repot to help it transition to the new soil. Monsteras are pretty good at telling you when they want more space though given they’ll droop and the aerial roots will be really long (in my experience). Hope this helps!

Really helpful, thank you for taking the time! She seems very happy right now tbh and the plant shop had had her for three weeks so I don’t think there are any hidden issues. I’ll wait until spring unless anything changes. Really helpful re monsteras telling you if they want more space - I’ve never had that issue as I’ve always been in charge of the square footage 😂

Congratulations on your new beautiful addition! The fenestrations in the leaves means she’s thriving so I think you’re making the right call 😊 My last repotting tip for this Spring is that if you’ve ever struggled with pests like I have (I had thrips this past year), adding systematic bonide granules to my plants’ soil mixture as a preventative measure has been a game changer! No bugs ever since! Hope your plant continues on it’s happy and healthy journey 🌱

Thank you! I am struggling with fungus gnats and have been all summer (though haven’t lost a plant so haven’t brought this one into a death trap) - I’ll try the bonide granules 👍🏽
