Hello guys I’m worried my monstera might actually die could anyone tell what’s wrong and what I’m doing wrong I put it in a cup of water to help relieve the stress it’s under!

I just found an ants nest inside the soil and freaked out because that meant the soil was really dry and I searched it up and was told to put it into a cup of water.

Tracy LeeWhy does the water look black? Can’t see the roots but the plant doesn’t seem bad.

Some of the soil still clung on to the roots and I didn’t want to break the roots because of taking out the soil.

I don’t know how to check the healthiness of roots but they seem to look and feel okay?

I am so sorry but they look really bad 😔 Roots should be usually white and plump. Black mushy roots usually means root rot. You will need to wash the roots super good in like warm running water. If there are any black or blackening roots left after washing thoroughly, cut them off. Hopefully you’ll still have something left. Flush with hydrogen peroxide. I have done this several times and worse case scenario, you can prop in water and start over. If there are roots left you can pot her up just be super careful the pot isn’t too big. Or you’ll end up with the same problem. She won’t grow like you have her now. She will keep getting worse. 😞
