Meet Desdemona. I brought her home to live with us early last week. It seems a repotting is in order. Is it advisable to place her in a size up nursery pot - current pot is 6” - or is there any reason I shouldn’t make her new home directly in this 8” ceramic pot with a drainage hole in the center?

    i really would not recommend potting monstera directly in ceramic unless you’re willing to fight with the pot next spring. monstera have such thick, sturdy roots and grow so fast that nursery pots are really the only good choice for them, as when the plant is rootbound you can gently squeeze the pot to loosen the plant. with clay pots, you’ll need to either break the pot or wrestle the plant out, likely damaging the roots. also, it’s worth noting that your monstera is facing the wrong direction; these plants have a “face” where the leaves point, and a “back” where the aerial roots point. the leaves, the face of the plant, should be facing towards the light source, otherwise you will end up with wonky growth as the plant tries to reorient itself for more light

      Great. Thank you! That was my intuition regarding the pot, but this is my first large house plant, so I wasn’t sure. I will wait until I can go buy a plastic pot. And thanks for the advice on direction. I turned her around to show her good side for the picture, but she’s back to soaking up the sun now. 😊 This window is her temporary home while my garden seedlings are taking up space in my sunroom. Can’t wait to give her a better location where we can more fully appreciate her.
