I still have my monstera prop in water (it’s grown a new leaf since I got it). As you can see the roots have really taken off in the last bit but I’m scared to transfer it to soil. Any tips on making the transition smooth? Should I use a semi-hydro medium rather than soil? Also what do you guys use for fertilizer? Any tips/advice is appreciated.

the longer you wait the more traumatic the transfer will be. i would put it right into whatever you plan was — soil should be airy and well draining. just keep an eye on it for a while because the roots have become accustomed to water so they can dry out more quickly. it’s a delicate balance between over and under for a while, but you’ve got this!

I’ve read where you you add soil to your water a little bit at time until you think its ready then plant. Definitely will need a moss to hang on. Have fun do what works for you

If you transfer to soil, help your little prop get used to the change by watering every other day for 2 weeks. Then you can reduce the watering to normal. Good luck!

i would definitely recommend semi-hydro for this plant if you have a coarse media like leca, pumice, or coco chunks. the key to transitioning is slowly introducing drought. for the first few weeks, water as soon as the top of media is bone dry, and gradually back off watering after that. hardy monstera appreciate a short dry period between waterings so eventually it will be beneficial to allow the reservoir to dry fully between refills. i’ve had a lot of success transitioning plants to soilless media from hydroponics this way. usually, i’ll root plants in water briefly, until they have a decent (2”+) root system, and then transition to a 3.5” nursery pot with pumice, typically, but sometimes perlite. the nursery pot sits in a vessel filled with water while the plant gradually adjusts to dryer conditions. once they’re stagnant (slowed growth) i’ll replant them in my soilless mix. i wouldn’t suggest adding soil to the water or watering your plant every other day as either course of action could easily rot the roots.
