Hi Guys! I’m just starting with monsteras, so I’m really hoping to get some tips from those who have successfully grown them! Right now, she’s been cut to propagate because she didn’t have many leaves at the bottom, and her bottom was thin and lacking. As you can see, there are two photos: the one on the right shows the cutting in water, hopefully to propagate, and the left shows what she’s like now. When I got her, she was in a huge pot that was way too big for her. After I pulled her out of the bigger pot, I realized that this smaller pot would be a perfect fit! Her environment as of now is she’s on the ground pretty far from any grow light but still in the light, the soil mixture is one that I based off what I read about them, and she’s on her own not around any other plants. I do also have a humidifier that is placed around 3-4 feet away from the mother plant in the pot.

Okay so I apologize in advance for this long response and info dump- I just get very excited about this kind of thing šŸ˜… Based on my personal experience with my monsteras, these are my tips: #1 Light: Download a free light meter app or purchase a cheap light meter to measure how much light your plant gets with the grow lights. If it also gets natural light, use the light meter at different times during the day to get a feel for what kind of light it’s getting. The minimum you’ll want is 400 foot candles (FC), but more light will encourage more fenestration and bigger leaves. I aim to give it about 1,000 FC with a grow light- up to 2,000 is good but over 2,000 and you may get washed out looking leaves. #2 Watering: I prefer to water when the soil is 100% dry but without letting it go dry for too long. Aim to water when the soil is 75-100% dry rather than just when Planta tells you to; the app is just making its best guess. Tanner the Planter on youtube has some helpful videos on when to water your plants and how to check them (I like the ā€œbaking methodā€ where you check with a chopstick). #3 Fertilizer: Any normal houseplant fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio such as 1-1-1 or 10-10-10 will do, but I have personally seen my monstera’s growth (along with my other tropical houseplants) absolutely explode once I started using Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro. It has macro and micro nutrients specifically formulated to give you large, lush tropical leaves. #4 support: you’ve already got a support for the mother plant, so that’s great! Once your propagation is ready to be potted into soil, giving it something to climb on is really important for monsteras. I did a diy sphagnum moss tower using metal chicken wire and zip ties for mine and it’s amazing how fast it grew. Sydney Plant Guy has some great youtube videos on making diy moss poles. I think moss poles will encourage the fastest growth but any kind of support/trellis will be good for them. Moss poles require a little more work to keep them watered properly, so while I think they’re great, it’s also up to your preference. #5 pot size: You were right to give it a smaller pot. Monsteras LOVE to be root bound, so don’t repot it until you can really see a lot of roots coming out the bottom. I also like to clean the leaves once per month by rinsing it off in the shower. Looks like you’re on the right track; good luck!

So I just checked where the mother plant is with the light meter app and it says only from 300-400, I’m assuming I should move it closer to my grow light?

yeah probably, I aim to have every leaf getting at least 400 if not up to 1000

I moved her closer to the grow light where the light meter app had said about 1,000, thank you so much!!
