Hi friends, Long story short I purchased this monstera albo on Etsy over a year ago. She started to get some rot on the stem where she was cut while in the soil and I removed the soil and she has been living in water for almost a year. I was told by my local plant store that there was no hope for new leaves or growth because of how she was cut by the original owner, but now she has a little something sprouting up. Is this a new leaf or a node? Should I pot her in some soil? Any suggestions would be great.

Not sure why they said there was no hope for growth because that looks like a node to me. And yes, that looks like a new leaf. How developed is the root system? I can’t tell if all those roots in the jar are from the albo or another plant. I’ve always just moved my water props straight to soil, but I’ve heard that water roots are different than soil roots, so not sure if the fact that it’s been in water so long would cause shock. Personally, I would wait until the leaf opens up before moving it to soil anyway

I will say it looks different than the way my albo cutting grew new leaves though. Mine come from within the the stem, not outside of it, if that makes sense

I totally know what you mean!! And mine come from within the stems too! I’m def going to wait for the leaf to mature before I move it to soil I’m scared of traumatizing it 😂😵‍💫

Yes the node finally activated! 🙌 I’m so excited for you. What a long wait! There’s a theory of “spent nodes” where if you make a single-node cutting from part that has already activated its node, there’s nothing to activate a second time. I haven’t tested that theory myself but I’ve heard it discussed in terms of cuttings scams. It sounds like that’s what the plant store folks were thinking of. It doesn’t look like a spent node to me though. Just an incredibly late bloomer I guess! lol. But better late than never ☺️

Wait I don’t get it and never heard of this. Wouldn’t this be considered a “spent node” then bc there’s already a leaf grown out of this node? I don’t get how that makes sense bc ive only ever cut my monsteras like this? It might just be slower growing since it’s not a top cut but i didn’t think there was such a thing as a spent node? I’m confused lol

That sounds familiar to what she had told me. I was pretty sure I got scammed cuz I did buy it while the albo hype was at its peak lol. I was trying to think of where the new growth would come out seeing as I couldn’t find anywhere for a node on this cutting! Thank you so much for your feedback 🩷 I will make sure to update as she grows more 😊

From my own propping experience, most monsteras have a backup node under the original leaf. I guess I’m actually not using the right term. This picture is what I’m talking about and they call it an auxiliary bud. The auxiliary bud will start a new growth point if the stem is cut. The brown scab on the stem is where the original leaf was removed to reveal the bud. But if you cut a section that has already activated the auxiliary bud and the new growth is damaged or cut off as its own prop, there isn’t another bud to grow from in that section. From what I understand! Not going to claim to be an expert 😅

Ohh I see what you’re saying now. I didn’t know that! So I guess the scams were people cutting too close to the node and above the axillary bud? I have just always left a good chunk of internode on my personal cuttings so never had that problem even though I didn’t know of it.
