I need some help with my monstera. I placed it outside a couple of weeks ago because of the warmer weather and bright sun. I’m trying to get it to have new growth and make fenestrations. Ever since I’ve placed it outside one of the leaves has been droopy and it’s looked a little sad. I first thought it was just stress related to moving but it hasn’t looked better. I don’t know if it’s still lacking light or not enough water? I watered it yesterday and it didn’t perk up at all. I know it’s probably ready to be moved further into the sun, but I don’t want to scorch its leaves.

      I believe too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to curl in order to protect themselves from sunburn and too much photosynthesis. If it’s not in direct sunlight at all, then maybe it’s not enough water? I’m new to the plant world so I’m not sure.

    With the size of the pot and the look of the soil it’s possible the soil may not be drying/wetting evenly, especially if the root ball isn’t large enough to draw the moisture from the soil sufficiently. Another note is sometimes their substrate may need changed depending on the environment. For example I may use a mixture that retains more water for a monstera outside, but a chunkier well draining mix indoors. Monsteras are epiphytes and really enjoy a good chunky mix, particularly if it includes woody inclusions like orchid bark and coco chunks that help with airflow and prevent root rot. I also find that they enjoy being a little root bound. The transition between environments could have also caused some shock if it wasn’t done gradually. In the past I’ve had plants lose around 50% of their leaves before finally starting to get back into the swing of things after a big move. Temperature fluctuations, differences in humidity, and changes in light can cause stress to the plant, and they may drop leaves as a result. I would take a quick look at the roots to rule out those as a problem before moving onto humidity, light, or temperature issues as possible causes.

      Here’s my monstera as an example.

      The pot itself is 8inches wide and 5 deep, while the monstera itself is just under 3 ft tall. It’s in a very chunky well draining mix and gets fertilized once every two weeks during the growing season.

    Yeah I’m trying to get it to grow more roots since I heard that they typically grow a lot of roots before putting out new growth. I might’ve given it too big of a pot which might be a problem. The soil it’s in now is regular potting soil mixed with probably 50% perlite and some orchid bark, and the place it sits now gets shade in the morning and bright sunlight in the afternoon. I’ll probably look at its roots tomorrow and move it to a smaller pot or bring it inside to grow in water until it gets a bit bigger and has more roots.

    This is very similar to what happened with my philodendron Jose Buono. My theory is shock. I ended up loosing all her leaves and i am now desperately trying to get her to propagate. 😫
