Hi. Newbie here and I have some questions. 1.what specific species of Monstera do I have? 2. Is it normal for it to go horizontal? 3. What suggestions can anyone offer on how I can best support this beauty?

    1. Monstera Thai Constellation 2. Yes, monsteras like to crawl and climb so it’s looking for a place to go next. 3. You can add support to the back side of the plant via trellis, wooden plank, moss pole…whatever you prefer. The part that’s leaning out of the pot is the back and what’s looking to be supported. They need a well draining chunky soil and are really susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Monsteras are the best! Welcome to the club. 🥰

Those nodes will grow into aerial roots. When in contact with the moist soil they will grow longer and will also help support it.

Follow up: I have some moss poles arriving today. Since the "back" is hanging over the edge, should I manipulate it to wedge the pole under and behind it bringing the stalk to a more vertical orientation? Or just place the pole nearby and encourage the plant to adjust on its own?

Also... When I bought the plant is had one Swiss cheese leaf, but also three little, not-holey leaves. Can I propogate them?

They only propagate from the nodes. You can keep leaves in water for decoration and they will live for a while, but won’t propagate that way unfortunately.

Just to address your moss pole question and mention a couple options: Right now your plant is crawling horizontally, which is something that large form monstera (like Thai cons) can do very happily. The growth you already have doesn’t need to be propped up. The magic with moss poles happens when the plant grows up on them, not just by anchoring them after the growth has already happened. For this plant, the most common solution would be to repot into a larger pot where there’s room to put the moss pole behind the stem, so that the new growth can start climbing up it. The other option would be to get a second pot and let it start to sort of crawl in to the new pot. Once you have 3 leaves that are rooted into the new pot, you cut the stem between the pots and now you have two monstera. Thats something I do sometimes when sizing up indefinitely isn’t really a good option for a crawling plant, and it can be nice to have another plant either in your home or to give to a friend

Thats a monstera thai, and yes they should/normally are horizontal growers :) I personally would get a moss pole for mine but mine isn't big enough, and yours could use the same. Welcome to the monstera mania family! :D
