So this guy has never had a pole, but is starting to lean. If I put a pole behind it, do I need to prop it upward or will that hurt it?

    Adding a pole shouldn’t hurt it, unless you try to push it in the exact opposite direction lol. If you want to give it the best chance to keep pushing out big fenestrated leaves I’d add some kind of support, though. People use anything from wood planks, to trellises, to full on sphagnum moss poles, it’s kind of up to you on how much effort you want to put in (moss poles need watering). Just add the support on the backside where the aerial roots are pushing out and attach it with plant Velcro or twine, etc to the main stem and not the petiole or leave stem.
