Hi, Question 1: Monster has been growing nodes like crazy. The problem is some of them are growing straight out. If they continue like this I won't be able to keep her where she's located because they'll get so long they'll touch the window. Can they be cut? Question 2: Can/should I cut off the small leaves around the bottom of the plant? Question 3: How damaged should a leaf be to cut it off? Question (s) 4: Another new leaf has fenestrations! It sprouted from one of the first leaves that had fenestrations. The new one has more. Is this normal? Does it matter if the "parent" leaf has fenestrations? I assume it doesn't. Will all the leaves that sprout from one with fenestrations have them as well? I tried to get a photo with examples of all my questions in this photo but also please feel free to look at the plant photos on Monster's page.

    I would cut the leaves on the top of the plant off (air layering) and then propagate the pieces if they have a node and can grow roots. Dying or yellowing leaves can be cut off (cut straight down to the petiole). It is normal for leaves to get more fenestrations after getting them. If you cut the leaves with fenestrations the leaves may revert back to their immature form before getting more fenestrations.

      What is air layering and what does it do for the plant?

      It’s a way to propagate a monstera. You can either chop the plant where a node is or grow roots from a node by wrapping it in sphagnum moss and keeping it moist. It’ll take away some of the height of the plant.

    Hard to tell but I think you have a couple of plants in that pot? I bought mine with 3 and left them for a year. Only one was thriving and giving fenestations the others where suffering. So separating them after so long has been a journey just food for thought. You can tuck your airel roots back into the soil if they get too long just kind of bend it gently back.

      I fear that some of my nodes are unbendable. I have at least one that is growing straight up in the air so I have no idea how I would be able to bend it down without breaking it. I have several others that are growing straight out or growing in a curved manner on a horizontal plane. Plus some of the nodes are high up on the stems. I believe there may be up to four plants in this pot. None of them appear to be suffering. They're all getting new leaves. I have thought about separating them into different pots. However I'm not sure I have pots that are the right size. I did not know anything about Monsteras at the time that I was gifted this plant or that Monsteras were a "single plant per pot" type of plant.

    (1)You can cut nodes short and it won’t affect the plant. I’ve done it many times before with my monstera. (2)You don’t need to cut the smaller leaves on the bottom they will naturally die off. But if you would like to you could it would promote new growth! (3)It depends, usually the damage would have to be pretty bad / half of the leaf. But you can remove them if you would like. (4) That means the plant is very happy! Yes they will grow new fenestrations generally with every new leaf if they are getting enough sun!

      I think the move to the East facing window has really helped promote the fenestrations. Before I moved it, it had just bumps for nodes and no fenestrated leaves. It took a few months for leaves to fenestrate and the nodes to grow in leaps and bounds.

      Yes then I would keep it there, I have a heater in my plant area too (granted it’s covered by a table and closed but my plants do perfectly fine)

    I have my monstera tied to moss poles with the aerial roots woven around all sorts of parts. Mine has also been shooting out aerial roots like bananas lately and I think I have to repot it soon.

      This roots are so resilient, I have another one shooting up out of it, going to separate it when I repot it soon (this weekend) to better support it since it’s out.of.control. If you think about the size difference in the leaves, getting rid of the smaller bottom ones helps to let the energy go to putting out new leaves and roots and stems! I have mine supported all the way up the poles as they get taller and heavier, but this also means they put out bigger leaves with more fenestrations! The more fenestrations they have the happier they are!! I only have a few of my first original leaves from the cutting I got years ago (it has one fenestration), and they started to look like Swiss cheese real quick as you can see from the first picture! I mist mine a lot in between waterings, she seems to enjoy it!! :)

      I got mine as a gift two years ago and she's already 2.5 feet tall. She's never stopped getting new leaves and I've had to change/move/add straps so she's not bending over. I'm concerned when winter comes that being right up against the window is going to be too cold for her (I live in Minnesota). I have one "arm" of leaves that needs to be strapped to the pole because it's gotten thick and heavy.
