recently acquired this monstera, only watered it once and pruned / added stakes but it’s taking a while for the soil to dry, despite the heat wave. how often should you water a monstera? i’ve closed the blinds during the day when it’s too hot (north/east facing window) but i’m trying to figure out why it’s wilting. could it be the a/c even though it’s always between 70-75*F? i’ve also added a humidifier.. don’t know what else i can do.. any suggestions? picture below is from today. thanks so much!

What kind of soil is it in? What size is the pot? Even when it’s HOT, a NE window is probably perfect for a monstera - don’t close the blinds.

oh yay, good to know re: window/lighting! pot is 10”, just bought it so soil is what it came in

The soil may need some extra aeration - adding perlite and orchid bark to regular potting soil is a good way to do that. Also, it may be root bound. I’d try to “gently” pull it out of the pot and see what’s going on. If you don’t want to size up (just and inch or two), then you can trim some roots off (not more than 1 1/2”), give it new soil and put back in the same pot.

That pot looks quite crowded 😳 it might even be multiple plants in one pot, a lot of nurseries do that to make it look more full. I wouldn’t even attempt repotting into the same pot, I would definitely size up. If you pull it out and find out it’s multiple plants you can probably split it and put half back in that size pot. I second Amie about the soil, I suspect the soil is either compacted or doesn’t have enough aeration. Either add perlite and orchid bark or get a chunky tropical soil mix (I have been liking Molly’s Aroid Mix) and repot it. Make sure to check for root rot, any black and/or squishy roots should get trimmed.

interesting bc i took it to the garden center to be repotted and they said it was best to keep it where it was, trim & stake it to train it to grow up, which we did

Im definitely not claiming to be an expert and like with all internet stranger advice take everything I say with a grain of salt! A lot of people are kind of in a “monsteras like to be root bound” camp, so maybe that’s it. Or, maybe there’s more room around the plant than I can see from the photo. Personally I’m in the “no plant likes to be root bound” camp, I just feel that some plants tolerate it better (and some plants do NOT tolerate too much room, but I don’t think monsteras are like that), and that being root bound can make over watering harder which is in my opinion why people think some plants prefer being root bound. It depends on your preference. If the soil is staying wet that could indicate the soil issues mentioned previously, or that the plant is SO root bound that the roots aren’t able to efficiently access the moisture in the soil. I would gently pull it up like Amie suggested to see how it’s doing. Or, you can stick your fingers down the sides of the pot into the soil. If you can feel roots that are starting to go in a circular direction around the edges of the pot, it’s root bound, and if that’s happening high up enough to feel it with your fingers it’s likely pretty badly root bound. Ultimately it depends a lot on your preferences and what you want to try this time around!

I wouldn’t close the blinds on it — NE is not a particularly bright direction for it to face so it needs light
