Hey all! I had a question about my monstera. I just got it last week and I am totally new to monsteras. Should I be adding a moss pole now? I cannot for the life of me figure out what side is the back. I do not see any aerial roots, and there’s at least 4 small leaves coming in. If anyone can help me that would be great.

I’d put in a moss pole now, personally. I like to put poles in even when plants are pretty little and don’t really need them yet just to direct the growth the way I want it. If you wait until it’s huge and growing all over, it’s going to be harder to secure and position it how you’d like. Also adding a moss pole will encourage the aerial roots to grow. But even a stick or something similar will work right now if you’re just trying to direct the growth. It doesn’t look like it needs ton of support just yet so it’s up to you!

Also seems like the front is what we’re looking at in the picture but looks like there’s multiple plants in the pot so they may not all be facing the same direction. You may have to readjust a bit if you want to truly have a front and back for a moss pole.

Where do you recommend I place ties on the plant for the moss pole?

When you say readjust, do you mean taking apart the plant?

Yes! You may have to get in there and really clean off the roots to separate it so you can rotate them. It sounds like a lot but it’s gonna be waaaay more manageable when it’s small. Here’s an example of my baby Thai constellation. Does it need the stick? Probably not. But I’d like it to grow up as straight as possible for space reasons lol you only want to tie it around the main vine, not the leaves or petioles. It’s hard when they’re this little though.

You can also separate them and put them in multiple pots too! They don’t have to stay together. It’s totally up to you if you want more than one around or you like the really full look in one pot!
