Calling all Monstra Maniacs! I had this fellow in a Southern window in Southeastern Wisconsin - but it’s winter, so the light is dim. The white areas of the variegation are turning brown. Is it overwatering, underwatering, too much light?

What’s the temp? Nothing will make a monstera eat its variegated areas quite like cold; I try to move mine away from windows in the winter and point my lamps at them instead.

Temps are low to mid 60s. Is that too cold?

From my own experience (also w variegated monstera in the Midwest winter) mid-60s is usually fine, but if they’re getting local temp swings because they’re near cold glass it can definitely be enough to cause damage. You can move them somewhere warmer or try a cheap heat pad under the pot, or both. Also keep in mind that wet soil or standing water will be cooler than the ambient temp, so it becomes even more important to let them dry out between watering. Don’t follow the planta schedule blindly. Someone else mentioned silica and I haven’t used that personally but I know a lot of sellers/collectors swear by it for keeping their variegated monstera nice.

I’m trying to figure a similar problem out on mine, and I suspect low humidity mau have something to do with it too. That being said, I can’t separate the cold from low humidity in my case

I use liquid silica for plants to help feed the variegated areas during the fall and winter, I’m in the PNW so it’s basically every watering

Thank you! I never heard of this, but I bought some and am using going forward.

Brown of the white parts often is caused by sunburn. It looks like there may be some overwatering issues as well.

When there is white or/and cream in any plant the plant has to work harder to keep those areas alive because they don’t produce chlorophyll so the plant has to work extra hard to produce and keep these variegations. Liquid silica is a plant food that is designed to help keep those white/cream areas alive and helps with the whole plant in general.
