Aah help! I was about to repot this monstera and then had to unexpectedly be away for a family emergency for 6 weeks. I moved the monstera’s position right before leaving to make it easier for friends to water and it exploded in size (good to know where it likes to be). Now it has roots coming out of the top and bottom and is very thoroughly stuck in the pot. I’ve never had a plant this size become pot bound and I don’t want to break it. I’ve been soaking the pot and have tugged and wriggled but nothing seems to be budging. Any advice??

  1. Show me the Greens!

I’ve seen videos (and they usually break the pot but they use plastic) where they GENTLY poke holes to loosen up the soil, break up the roots. It may take a while. I also wonder if you could cut the roots that are coming out at the bottom…? Google says yes, but minimally so as not to cause too much stress. Maybe try cutting the biggest root there and see if it loosens.

It’s out!! Soaking it all day and then easing a thin butter knife around and getting a second pair of hands to help me is what did the trick! 😅 But oh my goodness what a mess 😭 Hopefully it’ll be much happier in its new pot.
