This is my first Monstera plant! I bought a huge one for a friend when it was on sale and they gave me this little guy from it. It has about an inch and a half length root and a few smaller ones. When I first got it, I didn’t have soil or a planter for it, so I put it in straight water for maybe 36 hours. When I had the planter and soil available, I planted it. He looks really sad and I’m not sure if it’s from taking from the bigger plant, or the shock of water or the replanting in different soil. I’m still new to plant care, so any recommendations or tips on how to keep this guy alive would be much appreciated!

  1. Plant Father

the soil looks very muddy and wet. monstera are epiphytes and need an airy soil media in order to thrive. also, if it only has a few roots it’s best to treat it like a propagation and keep the plant in water or moss/perlite/leca to grow more roots

Thank you so much! I moved it back to water for now until I get more roots.

I agree. Also, if you do put it back into water, I highly recommend adding an air pump and air stone if you have one hanging around. The roots will be healthier from the oxygen in the water. As far as the soil, replace what you have with what we all like to call chunky soil (organic matter that is a bit “chunkier” than straight soil. The benefit of this is that larger chunks cause there to be larger gaps or air pockets in the growing medium, allowing for much better drainage as well as access for oxygen to get down to the roots. I’ve included an example of some “chunky” soil that I recently purchased…

My pleasure. I just checked Amazon for the aroid mix and it’s $29.95. I thought it would be less, since I just bought it locally in Salt Lake for $19.95.
