I got two new thai constellations! One is much larger and came with some odd kind of soil, rice hulls I think. I have alot of plants but I am new to these thai monsteras. I wanted to hold off at least a month for adjusting to its new environment to resoil/repot, at least for the larger one. The smaller one’s soil may be fine but I wanna swap both I plan on making my own mix most likely, not entirely sure but have read around older posts. Orchid bark, some leca, chunky perlite, coco chips, and possibly a bit of soil? I also found a very good mix on Etsy from a great seller! They’re currently under a grow light but also gets some indirect light and direct for an hour or two in the evening. Does anyone have any notes on how I should approach this? As well as the lighting situation? I want these babies to flourish!

    Hello!!! Thai cons are my bread and butter… I grew this girl from 3 leaves and my biggest tips are: 1. Yes to a chunky soil but mine LOVES some actual potting soil in there as well. It holds onto the moisture a bit longer which she loves! 2. If you want them to keep their cream coloring you have to give them quite a bit of light. I have mine under a 40watt grow light for 15 hours a day and she’s kept her color! 3. If you keep your humidity high and let her get rootbound she’ll grow enormous leaves!!! 4. I fertilize quite often tbh… she’s a hungry girl and they’ll grow like weeds!! I’d suggest using a liquid fertilizer so she can get what she wants from the soil. 5. Very prone to root rot but I have found that mine loves to be a little moist kind of like she’s in the rain forest!! 6. These girls will put their leaves out to face their light source so make sure you like where your light is! Xoxo best of luck and happy gardening!!

      Have you heard anything about liquid silica? I saw some posts saying people use that to preserve and help the white parts of the leaf

      I’m also just worried about how quickly I should change the soil it’s in now because I know it’s not ideal.

      I’m probably a bad influence… but I change mine the second it comes home to me and I’ve never had any problems…. I did fertilize that immediate water after a repot so it had some nutrients to help bring it back to life but I’d say go for it! I’ve never heard of the liquid silica but honestly monsteras are pretty resilient so I bet you could experiment!

    I have a thai constellation monstera that’s in a mixture of equal parts potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark and an original monstera deliciosa in a mixture that’s equal parts coco coir, coco chips, perlite, and lava rock. Both also have a little bit of horticultural charcoal and worm castings (about 10% of the mixture for each). They’re both really happy in their substrates, so my point is that as long as your soil mix is super chunky and well-draining, it should be good. Worm castings add some natural fertilizer but they’re not necessary. Horticultural charcoal is also nice but not necessary. The most important thing will be that you let it dry out 75% in between waterings. I like to use a chopstick to check on my soil moisture before watering. Grow lights are great! Just make sure they run for at least 12 hours. You can use a free light meter app to see how much light your plant is getting from the grow lights. For my monstera deliciosa I aim to give it at least 500 foot candles. For my thai con, I aim for 1000 because as others have pointed out, more light=more variegation. The free apps aren’t as accurate as the light meters you can buy online, but as long as it says it’s close you should be good! Good luck!

      Thank you! I’m leaning towards a a setup like this for now, and I am swapping soil in the next few weeks once it arrives!

      Good luck! Gorgeous plants! I also forgot to mention that monsteras prefer to be root bound and don’t want to be in too big of a pot, so aim for the pot to be no more than 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball. You’ll do great!
