Hello Monstera Maniacs: I need some help; I want to know how I can properly cut my monstera in order to propagate her. I have had this monstera for about 4yrs and last month she went under stress loosing some new leaves and I ended up cutting what was death and kept just only this three leaves. I really wan t to do this the right way and give her a chance so I would like to prune it correctly and give her a chance and also to help this one keep growing healthy. Any help and visuals please lol Highly appreciated

I would cut beneath the joint of the top two leaves. The bottom leaf will help keep sunlight energy coming in and then the node /joint will grow the roots. That said, it doesn’t look like you have aereial roots up near there. Having aereial roots will help propagation go faster.

Hey! Went back and saw your old posts on this girlie, sorry to hear you’ve had A TIME with her lately. Has she put a new leaf at all or shown signs of improvement since you last repotted?

She was growing two of those 3 leaves she currently have and she has been getting better

Ok sweet, it sounds like she’s on the road to recovery then which is good if you’re going to chop and propagate. She’s a long vine with lots of nodes so that gives you a lot of opportunity for cutting and making new plants, so that’s exciting. I’m gonna post another comment with a pic so you have as much info as you need when cutting so you can make a decision for yourself on where you want to cut.

I’m the same way! I found this pic online, it’s of a monstera albo but it shows the monstera plant parts really well. So when cutting you want to cut between nodes, and a node has an axillary bud (little bump where a new vine can grow), an areal root (may be present or may not be), and a petiole (leaf stem and leaf). You cut in the internodal space (part of the vine where nothing’s going on). I added in blue where you can cut.

I added in blue all the POSSIBLE places you could cut on your monstera. The more chunks you have the more possible plants you will get if they propagate successfully. Personally I’m not great at getting my propagations to live, so I would cut between every other or every third node. This will give each cutting more than one level to push out new roots and grow from the bud points.

Hi!! I had to do the same with my big monstera at the end of March due to root rot!! I cut my big baby into 8 pieces and started new plants from those. They all have new growth and look very happy and healthy!! I would say take advantage of the summer to help them grow faster! The plant with the three stems is the mother plant with the root ball so removed the leaves and I left 4 nodes on the main stem and repotted into the size-appropriate pot. Then cut the rest of the nodes above those 4 into individual ones and potted them directly into soil even if they didn’t have roots. Just make sure the bud is covered by soil or if you have areal roots put those in the soil and leave the rest of the stem out. It’s slow but it worked for me and now every node I cut and potted separately has new growth ! Sorry for your big girl!! But take it as an opportunity to get more plants and see them grow from almost nothing!! It’s been a beautiful journey for me!!!

Ok guys this is what I have so far on nodes and the other pic is the three leaves left and pretty much new ones that survived the rough patch… Q: for the this two (3) leaves left should I just repot them directly on soil or should I leave them in water??

Thank you!! I’m so proud of all of them because they’re growing so beautifully!! You can definitely plant those in soil if you want to, making sure that the stem isn’t fully covered as it can rot! So basically leave the stem out ( you can place it horizontally on the soil) and place only the root inside the dirt so it can keep growing. It might need support as the leaf is heavy and there’s no developed root system to keep it in place. In the other hand you can absolutely leave it in water and let the roots grow! Wait a few hours before putting them in water so the cuts are calloused and have less risk of rotting. Also, if you happen to have a Pothos you can add a Pothos cutting to the vase along the monstera as they kinda work as a growth hormone haha! Just remember to change the water every few days or what I used to do with my water propagations would be to blow some bubbles into the water through a straw so I could oxygenate it instead of changing it so often. Also remember that if you plant the cuttings, the rootball has to be able to fill 3/4 of it so it doesn’t rot!!!
