My monsters is beautiful and happy and thriving but she is growing out wide when I’d like her to grow taller. What do you recommend?

She can’t grow taller without anything to climb, she needs a moss pole
1 me gustaI’ll look into getting one! Will I need to cut the wider leaves? 😭
0 Me gustaNope, even those leaves would benefit from being secured to a poss pole at their origin! Whatever aerial roots are there already you’ll want to try and either redirect down into the soil or point towards the moss pole. It also honestly looks like it could do with a repot into something 4” bigger, it’s really filling up that pot. I would do a large moss pole filled with spanghum moss, not one of the wrapped coco coir ones. With something that large and heavy if you really want it to climb you may have to look into something homemade to make sure it’s secure enough.

to set your monstera up to climb, you will need to repot and attach the plant to a sturdy support like a board or trellis. moss poles are only ideal for smaller species, like monstera adansonii or obliqua. i would recommend watching a few videos online about trellising monstera. the plant has a face, the direction the leaves point (towards the light), and a back end, where the aerial roots point, which should be facing the support. a video will help ensure you’re placing your monstera correctly to set it up for healthy vertical growth. you may want to detangle the roots and rearrange stems if they’re growing different directions, to get them all facing the right way on the support. there’s no need to cut any leaves, but if you trim the roots when you repot it may be a good idea to cut a lower leaf or two. a general rule is to trim about the same amount of foliage as roots when you do a root trim.
4 Me gustaI’ve seen people do wooden boards with those flat spanghum poles attached to them as a way of being better support, do you think that’d work?
0 Me gustaThis is so so helpful! I watched a video about how they have a front and back and how if it was growing wide when I bought it that it was hopeless but this is what I needed to hear!! I’m going to look into it this week

I recently put mine on a moss pole, definitely recommend! I attached all the stems to it with plant Velcro hoping they will attach to it and I’ve already got some aerial roots growing into it ☺️
1 me gustaI didn’t even know plant Velcro was a thing. I still have so much to learn. Thanks so much:)

There are lots of useful videos on YouTube on how to make your own moss poles. Look up Sydney Plant Guy, he is the master of moss poles!
1 me gustaMy hero 🦸
1 me gustaA grow light above the plant may make it direct itself more upward as well! Just make sure it’s far away enough to not burn the plant :)
