New monstera mom here. I have two cats, that haven't attempted to get at my cat friendly plants. They are all on top of shelves about 3- 4 feet from the floor. I have wanted a monstera thai con for so long. I finally found one for $35. I know they want to grow big. I did a lot of reading about keeping it on the smaller side. So my understanding is yearly pruning of roots, and pruning New leaves as needed. I don't really want to go bigger than a 8-9 inch pot as I need to keep it off the floor and out of reach from my cats. I feel like this is frowned upon, but it's the only way I'll be able to enjoy having the plant. Just wondering if anyone has done something similar and can provide advice. Please no comments along the lines of I shouldn't have gotten it with cats, or I shouldn't have gotten it if I don't want it to grow huge. This is why I waited to find one at the price I did. If after a while it's not working out for me, I'll gift it or sell it. Thanks in advance!

I would put it in a room where you do not allow cats. Keeping a plant small can hurt it, make it prone to infection, and be bad. I know your pain having a great Dane with bull whip tail, and placement is key. I always go in smaller or harder to access places or rooms I don't put pets in (eg. Basement, upper window rooms, offices, and tall shelves.

It sounds like you’ve done your homework and your plan seems sound enough for what you want to do. The things you mentioned should help keep it a manageable size, but it will eventually have multiple growth points and get “bushier” the more you prune it. You have some time before you reach your 8-9in pot size limit so I’d just enjoy having one for now and just chop it when once it gets too big :)

I’m actually dealing with a similar issue and my plan is to try to eventually create a terrarium for mine or get some form of indoor greenhouse/cage-like structure so my cats can’t reach it. I have 4 cats altogether with my partner and so far I’ve been keeping my plants in a room away from the cats but I am moving in with my partner soon and will need a better way to keep them out. I may also put chicken wire or something like that around the plants with metal supports so they don’t move. Just a lot of options. Wishing you the best!
