      What’s a good rule of thumb for when I should water. Like how dry should the soil be?

    I usually water when pot is fully dry. But I use clear pots with many holes, so it dries out evenly. I’d lift the pot and get a feel for it. Even dig my finger or hand in over half way down the pot. Root rot occurs when the soil at the bottom stays wet, so the top part of the soil might feel dry but we’re at the bottom half. Use the custom schedule. Set it for 7 days, and then adjust the days from there.
