I just brought this monstera home that I bought off someone local for $25, not even really sure what’s going on here! I have two monsteras, and simple deliciosa and an Adansonii. I have tons of different pothos, some snake plants, and others. So I’m somewhat educated, but not totally. I’ve just never seen one look like this, but the main roots are clearly very strong and established. Are the long hanging ones dead? Should I leave them or cut them off? Did I get a bad deal here, i still feel like even the 5 good leaves are worth it, but they look like they’re yellowing also. Should I cut out the yellowing? Or leave it? I know I need to repot, but do you guys have any guidance? I have several pot options or I can go out tomorrow and find something specific, and I also have an extra 2ft adjustable moss pole. If there’s anything else you feel like would be helpful to mention, please share!! Thanks for the help in advance, I really need it!

Hi! Awesome find! Those long brown roots are called aerial roots. It’s the plants way of trying to shoot down some extra stabilization as it grows. You can definitely add a moss pole to make the plant more sturdy and grow upright. Does the pot have drainage?

You could either redirect the aerial roots back into the pot, leave them as is, cut them… if you cut them they’ll grow back eventually. You could also try to encourage the plant to grow its aerial roots into the moss pole

Hi! Thank you!!! It’s in a little bucket now because she didn’t want to sell the pot, but I’m planning to repot it asap. What would you do exactly? If you could provide some pictures that would be great! I’d like to know what size pot to put it in, and I assume that it needs drainage holes.

And what soil / soil mix do you recommend! I have a lows and menards local but could also order from Amazon relatively quickly.

Pry just stick it in something about the same size as what its in now, unless its root bound, then you can move the pot size up one to two inches. And make sure your soil is really chunky, add some perlite and bark to a regular potting mix.

So what would you do with the aerial roots? I don’t think they look very great as they are now. I still haven’t repotted because I’ve been working like crazy, I’m a health care worker 😪
