Thinking about getting a Thai Con. and wondering: are they harder to look after than normal monstera deliciosa? Thanks x

I feel like it was the same as my normal one. Haven’t really had any issues

Same here I got a Thai before I ever got a regular monstera and have had no problems other than they do sunburn a little easier

I have heard that Thai’s are more prone to root rot due to the tissue culture from the mother plant. There are some good videos on this on YouTube. I have mine in a really chunky aroid mix and a clear pot so I can keep an eye on the roots. So far, so good! These are definitely plants that you don’t want to overwater.

I haven’t had any issues with mine, but I have heard people complain about really bad root rot. That might be a watering problem, or a bad batch of tissue culture. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think I got anything special when it comes to a good or bad batch 🤷 DeeDee’s suggestions for a chunky soil and clear pot are great tips. Letting it dry out more that the average tropical is my tip. They have very robust roots, so they can handle a little more drought that some people think (but not as much as a succulent or cactus). Basically, err on the side of dry to avoid root rot

I actually have more issues with my regular monsteras than I do my Thai. My Thai is a fantastic grower and has put on new beautiful leaves for me monthly this winter. My monsteras have been growing much more slowly

Unsolicited advice, but another thing to consider is that the thai constellation market is dropping in price pretty quickly right now. If you hold out until they’re in big box stores or your local nursery, you could get it at a much lower price point. I live in somewhat rural Canada, and recently we’ve been getting thai constellation shipments to a local grocery store chain for $20CAD/each (<$20USD). Mine is attached, ignore the leaf cut, the worker ripped the leaf while packaging it 🥲. If you want to save a buck and still get a beautiful plant, that you’re not as worried about in case it goes downhill.

Grocery store Thai cons?? 😱 Talk about the end of an era lol. Great white sectioning on yours too!! Lovely I’m surprised Canada is getting really cheap really common to find ones first lol. Just thinking of the cold and all 😂 But I think technically, depending where in Canada a person is, they might have better weather than I do here in New Hampshire, US. And it reality, there’s probably more of a business reason than a weather reason, I just don’t know what it is. Anyways, enjoy that beauty! What a steal

yes i’m quite pleased with mine! i actually got a small, less variegated one this past fall for $20 from a rare plant shop. maybe i’ll have more satisfaction from it since i’ve grown it since it was a baby. but yes someone told me that now only plant sellers in canada are jumping onto the $20 thai constellation craze, so maybe it will hit the us soon.
