TLDR: I have been keeping these massive monstera cuttings in water buckets, how do I know when to plant them in soil? Hi! First time posting here, I’m quite new to plants but I am super obsessed so far, about a couple months ago I found out I had a giant 6ft-8ft monstera growing on my tree on my front yard (I knew it was there before but had no idea what it was until I got into plants) probably growing for a few years, (I actually found out it came from my neighbors yard but once it hit my tree it just grew like crazy) anyways like a month after noticing and started to take more care of it my landlord comes in and cuts it off lol, i tipped the guy cutting it and he gave me the removed plant in several huge pieces. I have trimmed and placed the pieces (each is probably half a foot tall and a foot wide on the leave ends) in individual buckets with water to try and propagate, however my question is when do I change them to soil? All the fragments have roots that were attached to the tree and aerial roots intact and some have started sprouting new roots as well in water. Should I continue leaving in water and changing water for a couple of months or can I go ahead and plant in soil?

Wow! What an amazing story!! And those leaves are massive! Do you plan on keeping it as an outdoor plant to placing it indoors?

Thank you!! Maybe a couple indoors in my shed and some out, honestly whatever makes it thrive the most, I’m not really sure what I’m doing lol, pretty new at this but I really reeeally want to save and propagate this beauty, I actually kept the smallest fragment indoor in my living room with a grow light in water, it has some leave damage from before but I’m hoping it does well too!

Yeah. That’s why I asked. Firstly , I should say whichever route you take you will probably experience some damage, leaf loss and a loss in leaf size as these cuttings accumulate to their new environment and recover. Keep in mind that no conditions indoor is going to be as good as it was living outside. There are a few grow lights that are great but many are just subpar in comparison to full sun/natural light. So don’t panic and try to be patient with the plants transition. As to the question you asked. Everyone will respond differently but if it were me..for the plants I’m taking indoors I’d cut down to one node and keep in water while it accumulates to my indoor conditions giving it time to grow roots. However if I were keeping it outside if keep that massive cutting intact and plop it in the ground as is. Lol. Baby both with as much light as possible and good quality fertilizer. Also for the ones in water, don’t forget to change the water weekly or every 7-10 days if you can. Good luck! I have a feeling this is going to be an awesome learning opportunity for you! I love it!
