Hi everyone, hoping you all had a good holiday. I’ve had this monstera for a few months, and it has been growing happily. I have 3 new leafs coming, with 2 of them growing out of leaves that grew recently under my care. The one that is currently unfolding seems to be bigger in size than any of the leaves that were born under my care, however, it doesn’t have any splits/fenestrations… my concern is: why was the mother leaf (and others prior to this one) born with fenestrations and this new leaf does not have them? They’re under the exact same conditions facing a large west window. Thanks in advance for your help!

I agree with what everyone's saying! It could be possible because it's almost winter now, the sun can't get it the full light it needs to grow fenestrations! I think in the spring it will be so big and beautiful!

Other than not enough light, If it is not being watered properly, the leaves will not come out fenestrated. I notice you have a gnat sticky trap stuck in the pot, and I can see a yellow tinge on a couple of leaves. Both of these things can mean watering a bit too soon, or pot too large for it to dry out.

Thank you so much for this perspective. For some reason I keep getting those bugs even after repotting. I even bought a new plant that I haven’t watered yet and is isolated, but is getting bugs as well. I will reassess my water schedule as you suggest. Thank you very much!

Thank you all for your responses, I will take into consideration everything you guys have mentioned moving forward. As an update, this is a new photo of the unfolded leaf, unfortunately it’s covering up a beautiful (and smaller) leaf with bilateral 4 splits… but the other 2 new leafs seem to have the same number of fenestrations as their mother leaves (3 & 2) and are the usual size.

I had a monstera that grew un fenestrated (since sold the plant) leaves that were still large, even though it was growing under a grow light. I ended up repotting it, the pot I had it in was too big and it was sitting in too much soil for too long. It also had a bit of rot on the roots. I also now use a skewer to check for moisture and all of my monsteras are in a super chunky mix.
