I need help with my new monstera! A neighbor gifted it to me - I’ve been wanting one forever and I’m terrified of killing it! I don’t have a proper planter for it (I don’t think), so I put it in a cookie jar for now (lol). There is no drainage, but I think that’s okay as long as I don’t overwater? Any help and advice is appreciated!

Looks like the roots are really healthy! I’d do your best to find a pot with drainage. Plants like to be thoroughly watered thru. The only way to do that is to allow water to run out the drainage holes. Monstera’s are pretty resilient, but you’re definitely taking your chances. You can often find nursery pots (the type plants come in) at nurseries. They’re only about $2

Thank you! I’ll definitely invest in one asap! I gave part of it to my boyfriend and he’s currently got it in water…bad idea?

No, I think water works for these plants for the most part

Okay so just straight water (no dirt) is fine?

Well …. It’s takes a Special kinda Plant mom to have a flourishing Monstera! I’ve come to learn and find out. Water growing is fine but ideally the want you to mimic a tropical rainforest!! Some dirt some orchid mix and they like steam. The answer lies in You. No drain holes and you better be very attentive. Maybe rocks on bottoms to let some drain. Don’t overwater either don’t under water the leave will dry and yellow on tips!! Pleas invest in proper container if You Want to be successful Monstera Mama!

These beauties love light too, so make sure to put it by a window!

It looks like it’s been propagating in water for some time. I would keep it in fresh water (change weekly) until you find a pot with good drainage and some good soil. Monsteras are picky when it comes to soil, so do research in the meantime. Hope this helps 🙏🏾
