Hello! I recently got my first monstera and had a couple of questions and I’m hoping someone here might have some insight. My first question is in regards to a root that is growing out of the pot. Initially, I thought it might turn into a leaf or something but it just keeps growing further out of the pot. Should I just cut it off or would it be best to keep letting it grow? You can see a picture of the root in one of the pictures. My second question is in regards to cutting leaves off the plant. As you can see in the pictures, most of the leaves are growing in a single direction towards my window. There is a single leaf that is kind of facing away from the window. Should I cut the lead that is facing away from the window off? I was thinking that maybe removing that leaf would provide more energy for the other leaves or maybe provide energy for another leaf to sprout that might be better positioned to get more sun. Thanks for any feedback!

The root that is growing out of the pot is called an aerial root. You can cut them off if you like, they’re just gonna keep growing. I cut mine off when they start touching the floor. In regards to the leaf that’s not facing the sun, there’s really no need to cut it off unless it’s turning brown. Try cleaning the leaves now and then, dust buildup can prevent nutrition from the sun. Also, I would recommend rotating the plant every time you water it so that all the leaves spread out and they’re not all leaning to one side. Anyways, you gave a happy looking monstera!😊

You could also provide some support for it if you’d like it to stick straight up; I use chopsticks sometimes and just either attach it to the chopstick with a hair clip or wire/ tie !

Thanks for the advice! He is a little lop sided in the pot I have him in now so maybe I’ll give that a shot when I repot him.

Be careful with this method, wooden chopsticks will rot in your soil

I have a 3 inch wide stake that is about 4 ft holding up mine with green plant wire. I want mine to stand not drop onto the floor and she’s happy.

Give it support posts, cut off the leave facing in the other direction, google monstera front and back face and learn all about that (it’s too much to type here lol). And you can do whatever with the aerial root!

And you are correct that that leaf could be taking energy from the other leaves! Would def recommend pruning it. If you cut it at the node (very bottom of stem) you can even plop it in some water and propagate roots!

I transplanted my momma monster yesterday. Her aerial roots are just as crazy as yours. I ended up snugging them to the moss pole and/or gently putting them In the new soil to encourage additional root growth. Sometimes I’ll spray them With water. They need a drink too! Pretty proud of my work-home made moss pole. Hope this helps! Happy growing!
