Hi! I just brought home my very first monstera— a variegated Thai constellation. I’m wondering how it’s going to climb if it doesn’t have any nodes or aerial roots growing on the stems yet. How will it know to climb and/or produce nodes? (I’m getting a coco pole soon) Also, how will the stem thicken? Will it always be this skinny? Thanks friends! G

Thai Cons are natural crawlers if your looking for the strongest growth I would recommend getting a rectangular pot planting them at one end to let them crawl and establish a good root system and stem

Oh that’s a great idea! Thank you! I have a 12” diameter x 4 or 5” deep circular pot with a drainage hole in the center about the size of a quarter. Would a monstera like that? Or is it too shallow for long term? I used to have cacti in it

That would work fine monstera generally focus on root growth first then the leaf so the tighter the space the quicker it fills with root growth

Well the plant comes preprogrammed nicely enough. Monsteras are really really cool tropical plants that normally climb trees looking for filtered sunlight. There is a front and back of the plant so making sure you plant the pole and the plant right makes things easier for the monsters to use as support. Unless you have something like a sphagnum moss pole the aerial roots will not grow in to the pole. Those roots need moisture to contribute to the plants growth. Nodes are inherent to the plant. As it grows and more stems shoot more nodes will come with.
