I am in need of advice. I’m trying to get my monstera attached to a moss pole. This is my first time. I want to get it to climb and I’m having a lot of difficulty with it so I need to know what to do and how best I might do it. The main problem is whatever the nursery used as medium is so tightly compacted I wasn’t able to completely get it off my plants roots while switching soil types. It was extremely root bound and I found that it had a cloth plug attached to it. I wasn’t unable to remove it so I did clip it on several sides to try to loosen it. Because the top of the soil was so compacted I couldn’t loosen the roots at the top or straighten out aerial roots and attaching the moss pole didn’t go how I’d like. How do I best sort this out. I know there’s gonna be different opinions and ideas. I’m not against a chop and prop if I absolutely have to.

    hi! you may need to pull her out of the pot again. you have successfully found the "back" of her stem, but it needs to be touching the moss pole, not just attached by velcro. because you have no aerial roots yet it may take a moment to see results, but having the stem directly leaning on the moss pole is how the whole process moves along the quickest. other than that you've done very well for your first time.

      She has aerial roots. But they have been buried in the soil so long before I got it they’re tangled in those tightly compacted roots/top soil from the nursery that I can’t sort out.

      more will grow with the next few leaves, it's nothing to worry about. the aerial roots that have been buried are just normal roots now, which is kind of what they're supposed to do anyways, so 🤷‍♂️ no big deal

      Since I can’t get it any closer should I just sort of let it do its thing and train it to use the pole over time? Since the current growth so tightly compacted at the moment I have no other place to attach Velcro to encourage it close at the moment. It has another leaf currently developing nap there’s nowhere I can attach it.

      can you reposition it in the pot? like take it out and tilt it against the pole and then put it back in?

    If it is so compacted that the pole can not penetrate you can always find a chunk of tree that can fit in the space to give the plant “the touch” to activate more aerial roots to attach to the pole eventually.

      The touch? Like putting something in between to simulate it being also touching in that space?

      In order for Tiki to attach to the moss pole better it needs to feel the pole or wood on its back. They will produce aerial roots not matter what but doing by touch gives it direction. I hope this makes sense.
