Not exactly attractive, but got a temporary shade cloth setup to get through this Arizona summer. I’m wondering if I should invest in a more permanent setup. Would they benefit from having year round coverage?

    Have they been getting too much sun? Most cacti like to be in direct sun all day

      One thing I have learned the hard way is full sun doesn’t mean Arizona sun 😂 It’s pretty brutal. I can’t touch the pots they’re so hot. I know the roots are just cooking sometimes.

    You are in the home and heaven to many cacti species but I can imaging the raging summer heat over there. We’re in the 90s on the east coast and it’s not even August đŸ„” I think it’s great you have some of them elevated off the rocks too, love that shelf! You probably already know that long extreme high temps can cause your cacti to go dormant or even terminate them. I would invest in a semi-permanent structure. Are you talking about a greenhouse situation?

      No, I would be worried about the heat with anything enclosed. Just something more stable with a larger shade cloth. This whole thing may land in the neighbors yard with a good monsoon! I think you’re right though and they do need something full time. Cactus might love the sun, but it’s tough here at times. My prickly pears and hedgehogs are the only ones who don’t seem to be suffering. The shade cloth seems to be helping the other guys!

      I completely understand. My best friend lives in Show Low. He grows cacti and euphorbia indoors due to the conditions. You’re right, they would bake enclosed but also counter with humidity. Having good ventilation would be a major factor. It’s something I think about often for myself where it rains so frequently. Thunderstorms, rain for three days, two day break then rain again. In any case, it’s doable just tons of planning. If you plan on digging for posts, I find a 6” auger bit helpful. I’d be interested to see what you come up with.

      I’ll post whenever I figure it out! It will probably involve an auger and 4x4s.
