I remember the day several years ago when I received this Echeveria Serrana. Originally, I thought it was an Echeveria Dark Moon.
It was delivered and the most horrible packaging ever and the other succulents with it had broken pedals everywhere.
This Echeveria was originally difficult for me to propagate. I would often try and try and try to get any of the leaves to grow. And each time I would feel miserably.
But this is the Echeveria that taught me to just throw a fallen or carefully taken off peace onto the top of soil and let it grow or not grow. And on your own type of situation.
I discovered they just like to fall off or you know, be thrown anywhere, after I discovered one under my couch that had rooted into the carpet. I figure if they’re gonna fall off in route then I’m just gonna let them fall off and I’ll throw them back on the dirt.
The one plant that I had delivered turned into at least eight different huge plants. These are not the last two of the original these are just the biggest two of propagations. I just leave them outside all summer. If I bring them inside, then they don’t turn purple. They love the sun in the heat.

I think I bought this pencil cactus last November 2025. It came in a huge bucket, with other succulents and cactuses, from Home Depot.
Sometime in February, maybe March, I accidentally almost killed everything in it, and I don’t know how. Because of that I busted up the entire bucket of plants and I put this guy, who I did not think would survive, into a concrete planter.
Even in Philadelphia, a pencil cactus will turn into a fire stick cactus when the temperature turns cooler in the fall. And considering we just had a nor’easter come through, and rain for three days, he’s doing pretty good.
