Hi everyone! My licorice succulent Nathaniel is doing very well! So I have two questions; 1) Are these buds flowers? 2) When should I propagate him? Thank you! 😊

I don’t know the answer but where did you get the planter pot?

I made it! It’s out of oven-bake Sculpey clay. You can get it at Michael’s!

I’ve been thinking of trying out making pots at home! What kind of paints did you use? Did you seal it with anything after?

For this one I didn’t seal it with anything! For the paints I mixed a couple lying around; just make sure they’re waterproof! I hope you have fun making them if you do! Have a great day/night!

Yes those look like flower buds to me, though I don’t know much about this species.

Ok, don’t think I’m crazy or don’t feel like you have to do this but I actually cut OFF the buds because it puts more stress on the main plant because it’s adding energy to the buds. If you cut the stems off, carefully pick off each leaf and throw it into a ziploc bag. Put it in a lighted place but not full, direct sun. In my opinion, these are the easiest succulents to propagate!

Thank you! This is really great advice and I will follow it! I might not cut off the flower buds just yet because I think the plant is doing well enough to handle some stress. But I will propagate the succulent like you said. When should I propagate him? I also think that you’re actually very smart for cutting the buds off!

You can propagate a grown leaf with a clean break from the stem anytime. When I repot in March, I take all my leaves and propagate (it takes a LONG time). By summer they have roots and buds and I arrange them in a pot. I throw them in full sun on my porch and have SO many by fall I’m giving them away! The picture is a pot I started in the fall.

Btw - I am also treating it for bugs (not sure what kind) so some of the leaves are a little wonky. Damn pests!
