I have a huge collection of Bromeliads. I live in Pennsylvania so they can’t stay outside year-round. I had them outside on our patio and bringing them in. I didn’t realize that I had over 66 plants. Most are in my atrium. The rest are scattered throughout the house. I also have three large palms that obviously aren’t getting enough light. I hope they make it through the winter.

Here’s a friendly guide to keeping your bromeliad happy and healthy: Light • Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves, but don’t keep them in deep shade either. A spot near an east- or west-facing window works great indoors. Watering • Bromeliads are unique because they have a central “tank” or cup in the middle of their rosette where they store water. • Keep this cup filled with filtered or rainwater, and flush it out every week to avoid stagnant water. • Water the soil lightly, but let it dry out between waterings—bromeliads don’t like soggy roots. Humidity • Bromeliads love high humidity (around 50–70%), so mist them regularly or place a tray of water with pebbles nearby. A humidifier is also a great option if your home is dry. Temperature • They prefer temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep them away from drafts, heaters, or air conditioners. Feeding • Use a diluted, liquid fertilizer (like one for orchids) once a month during spring and summer. Feed into the central cup or lightly mist the leaves.
