Anyone have a Christmas cactus that’s really thriving they would like… | Show your plants | Communauté Planta

Anyone have a Christmas cactus that’s really thriving they would like to share a photo of? I was recently gifted this from a friend who took it from her late grandmother’s decades-old Zygo and potted it up. It’s not in great shape now and I’ve just gotten it out of the plastic liner (😬) it was living in and into terra cotta with a bromeliad mix. [Redacted because I’m not looking for advice this time, just beautiful photos of your zygos! 😅] Cant wait to see her thrive! Would LOVE to see your gorgeous Zygos for inspiration during these trying times - show them off! 🤪 (My pink Thanksgiving below)

When I get home I’ll take a pic of mine. She hasn’t fallen over yet but will be soon! She has probably produced over 40 new leaves in the last few months. I got her last year! She only put off one flower this year.

I wouldn’t water by misting the soil. The roots won’t actually get any water, and it could cause mold or fungus gnats. All plants prefer to get thoroughly watered, even if their root systems are still getting established.

Hmm the misting is going to prevent mold I think. I don’t want to water all this soil for 1/4 inch roots. Not enough roots to soak up all that water! Thanks for replying!

How big of a pot are you going for? With roots that small, it would be considered a propagating succulent, which should still get thoroughly watered to encourage roots to grow deeper. And keeping the topsoil wet is exactly what causes mold to grow and what encourages fungus gnats to lay eggs. And if you aren’t misting enough to keep the topsoil wet, then the water definitely isn’t penetrating the soil and reaching the roots. I have spent a lot of time educating myself on houseplants and how to keep them happy, and I have a lot of experience with this plant.

Thanks Riley! My post isn’t asking for tips, just inspo. If you have photos to share, I’d be glad to see them!

You really shouldn’t mist it though. Cacti don’t like to get wet. Watering the soil throughly is the best for the plant. Even if it only has a few inches of root. Water it till water runs out the bottom and then don’t water it again till the soil is completely dry. That’s how they do best.

I don’t think anyone is trying to step on your toes. I would just hate to see a generational plant die. Make sure not to pot it in a pot any bigger than 2 inches of old pot. Water all soil throughly then let dry out. It will be thriving soon! Here is a pic of my baby cacti. Pretty sure it will start falling over soon. It’s about 12 long.

Mine is currently sitting outside… And has gotten some gorgeous sun stressing. I’ll likely bring them in over the summer, because I’m not sure they’ll survive Arizona heat.

That’s about the size of mine last year, now it’s over a foot tall! It will take off pretty fast. Well, the first 6 months mine didn’t grow a ton, but when this spring hit, I swear it’s put out at least 40 new leaves.

Yours is beautiful!! Something to look forward to for my little gal! I was worried when I saw the areal roots that I wasn’t giving her the best conditions but a new leaf seems promising, and if they take a while to acclimatize l have something to look forward to!

I'm not quite sure what type of zygote cactus mine is... I thinks it is a Thanksgiving cactus. But mine is growing beautifully at the moment. A little bit yellow, but I moved it to have less sun light and is already looking much better than before. I am still new to being a plant parent, but we have had this dude for ages just sitting in our front yard. I kinda adopted him from my mums care when I became plant crazy lol
