I was going through progress photos on my plants this evening and after seeing my BOP from two years ago to this evening…I’m thinking my husband either needs to build me a plant conservatory…or buy me a new house soon! 😂

      I didn’t realize when I got her that she was a Nicolai strelitzia and that if grown outdoors can be as large as 30 feet tall. Indoors they tend to stay smaller (5-7 feet) but I think I baby it so much it may wind up larger than that. My ceilings are 9 feet tall and I have a feeling the next set of leaves are going to top out.

      I’ve had one for about 5 months now. She put out 2 new leaves early and hasn’t done anything else since. Please share your secret?

      Mine spent her first year in an east facing window in my dining room. Last summer I attempted to move it to the front porch (in front of that same window) but even with a good 3 weeks of slow acclimation it got too much sun and scorched really badly (hence visible leaf damage). I moved it back indoors to the same room and allowed it a couple months to recover. It gave me a couple more new leaves. This spring it had sent a very thick single root out the bottom of the pot and I was forced to repot (scary but manageable). In the new pot it gave me new a LOT of growth and I had to find it a new home as the dining room didn’t have room for a table AND BOP. Now it is in a western facing window and I give it additional supplemental light because they want long days with full sun. I’ve gotten 5 new leaves since the move and a new pike is currently growing.

    Heather thanks for the info. I guess I’ll start with a repot. I do think she may not be getting enough light also. So I’ll work on those two things and see if she’ll perk up.

      Keep us posted! Optimize your soil when you repot for the best results. I used 50% potting soil (not potting mix) 30% perlite and 20% bark (I use small pine bark mulch that is sold in garden centers…just make sure it isn’t dyed).
