My Christmas cactus’s first ever blooms! I saved him from death at a gas station last year. wasn’t sure how that would turn out. Turns out, he LOVES my classroom! I honestly didn’t do anything special except using the self-watering plant pot to control more or less water availability for the plant during the year. This app says the plant is placed too sunny, but it seems to like my sunny classroom (it is several feet from the windows).

Very beautiful! Love that shade of red. I thought I’d share this graphic with you. It looks like you have a Thanksgiving Cactus, not a Christmas Cactus.

Love the color! Just wanted to let you know it looks like you have a Thanksgiving cactus, also known as the false-Christmas cactus. They’re very often mislabeled as Christmas cacti and sold around the same time, but the leaves and flowers distinguish the two. If it’s blooming now, in November (thus the name. Christmas cacti bloom in December to January) that also helps determine what type of holiday cactus this is. Hope this helps! 🌵

No problem! Congrats on the successful plant rescue. I recently rescued one of my own for $4 from my grocery store 🌺

Pro tip from a chronic plant rescue addict: the Lowe’s clearance section often has mixed succulent planters and relatively decent plants that are healthy enough to rescue. I’ve rescued quite a few of them to gift them to residents at my local retirement home. Succulents, jades, snake plants, and peperomias tend to be in the best shape out of clearance section rescues. It’s a great way to save plants on a budget, but fair warning: you might start rescuing quite a few of them, then realize you don’t want to keep them all, so I tend to do it just to have a low cost army of plants to gift my friends and family for the holidays 😊

Here’s some of rescue gift boxes, for example. Especially if you want to gift something to someone new to plants, I’ve found that peperomias, aloes, haworthias, snake plants, jades, echeverias and similar succulents, and elephant bush were both quite popular with my residents and were easy-care enough for someone looking for a low-maintenance addition to their home. I got about 12-15 plants out of a mixed succulent planter that was reduced to $15, used pots I already had at home, and about $7 of Espoma’s Cactus and Succulent Mix to repot them all. About $22 total for each mixed planter I took apart to gift to the residents.
