Purchased this little beauty today. This is my third calathea. The first 2 did not survive. I have much more plant mom experience under my belt now and I am determined to keep this one alive. Please tell me/show me where you keep yours and how you care for it so this one does not meet the same fate as its predecessors.

I’m still a a little new when it comes to keeping plants, but I can pass on what’s worked so far for me, and some advice I’ve gotten from others on the platform 😁 I’m not sure how much you know about the species so I’m just going to list everything lol Something very important for this plant specifically is humidity and consistency. Try to keep the plant in the same spot, where temperature doesn’t fluctuate. They don’t like sudden cold drafts. As for humidity, some people keep them in their bathroom when they shower because of the steam, but you could also put a humidifier near it. The other option, is just misting the leaves when needed which is what I do. I mist them every other day. Plus, I put some sphagnum moss on the dirt which is supposed to help as well. As for light, they can handle low light but they don’t really thrive in it, and I would not suggest it. They prefer bright, indirect light. Don’t put them in direct sunlight or else they’ll get sun burnt. For soil, I would go with a well draining potting soil. You could also mix in some coco peat, a compost mix, perlite, and pine bark (orchid bark works too). I’m just doing the potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. Finally, for fertilizer, a balanced fertilizer would work well. Fertilize it more in the spring and summer since that’s when it grows. And then like all other plants it does need to be pruned occasionally lol. I hope this helps!!!

Thank you very much for the reply! When I brought it home I put it near a humidifier I have because the app said it liked higher humidity. This is a lower light area though, so hopefully it’s ok. I need to order some more plant lights. I have soil mixed with perlite, bark and coco coir so when I repot it, this is what it will get! Thanks again so much for the response!!

i keep my calatheas in the window that receives non direct light but it’s super bright they really like that but the sun will burn her leaves so it can’t be direct, keep the soil moist and rotate the plant regularly. my two calatheas love this and are thriving right now

I’ve been thinking of putting it in my north facing window. Other plants seem happy there. It’s bright but not direct sun at all. Thanks so much!!
