Hey all! How can I get my Christmas cactus to flourish? I am in Montreal and I left my cactus outside during a rainfall accidentally and now the soil is super wet, but how could I get it to flourish more??

New soil and a bit of a smaller pot might help. A bit more light will also speed along the process. I think your cactus is a thanksgiving cactus. I hope it gets better soon feel free to update!!!

Let it get a bit dry before watering again and put it near a sunny window. You may need a little fertilizer. Succulents sometimes like a little sand in the soil. If the soil is really dense it might be rotting the roots.

It looks to need a much smaller pot. I’ve got 3 that I take care of, and they enjoy being more snug in their pots and getting rootbound between repottings. They’re epiphytic, which means they need well-draining soil to survive as a houseplant. I keep mine in Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent mix, but a well-draining cactus mix or an epiphytic or bromeliad mix should do just as well. Just avoid Miracle Grow’s soil; even their cactus mix. It isn’t well draining enough, especially for this type of cactus. They enjoy completely drying out between waterings, grow faster in brighter light, and do not enjoy the cold. For starters, I’d check the roots for signs of shock, rot, or distress, then downsize the pot into something no more than 1-2 inches wider than the width of the plant’s rootball. The two pieces of cacti you currently have would likely enjoy being potted together in a much smaller pot, and will fill the pot out over time once it’s in better health. Hope this helps 😊

Thank you 😊 I’m a big fan of them. I’d really like to get one with white flowers someday, but I plan on combining the two smaller ones together for fun, cause I have yet to see what color their blooms will be, so I’d love if they turn out to have two alternating flower colors 🌺 They’re not always put in the best type of soil, and sometimes they need a smaller pot, but once they’re in a pot and soil they like, they can become really beautiful plants. 🌱
