Sunny

This is the latest I have seen a Epiphyllum Oxypetulum, (Queen of the Night, Dutchman’s Pipe, jungle cactus), stay open!😃 I took this at 6:30am today. The flowers typically begin open about 9pm at night and begin dying drooping by sunrise. The bloom is about 10” wide. There is a myth they only bloom once a year. They repeatedly bloom during the growing season. The yellow leaves are from sun/heat stress. The plant uses a lot of energy to bloom several flowers. The plant will pull all the moisture back out of the flowers until they are the size of a pencil. So, don’t remove the flowers after blooming stops. It’s an easy care plant. A one inch leaf section can grow new plants. The root system is small being a tree climbing tropical cactus that gets rain water from the aerial roots that attach to trees in its native environment.
