Hello fellow plant parents ☀️ So last night, I decided to buy a Pinstriped Calathea 💜 I want to repot it into new soil but am afraid that regular all purpose mixing soil may not be the way to go. Anyone know if it’s okay and safe for the plant? 🤗

Hello, so I would not recommend repotting it right away since that can put a lot of extra stress on the plant especially since you just brought it home. I would wait at least a week to let it acclimate and then repot! Also indoor potting mix is okay but if you really wanted to help your plant thrive I would use a good potting soil like fox farm for two parts, 1 part perlite, 1 perlite orchid bark. Most orchid bark mix comes with charcoal but if you purchase just plain orchid bark I would buy planting charcoal as well!

Thank you 😊 yeah I should wait to repot as I just got it! The soil is different looking so that’s why I asked and thanks for the thorough explanation! I’m learning as I go with new plants and really fascinated by all plants 🌱

50/50 perlite and potting soil is great for most houseplants. all purpose potting mix is much too dense for most and using it on its own can lead to overwatering and root rot. you can get fancier with extra drainage amendments like coarse perlite and pumice, and fir or pine bark chips (“orchid bark”) or coco husk chunks. some people even add leca to their soil mixes. i’d recommend waiting til spring to repot since the plant is healthy and it was just relocated. make sure to use rainwater or filtered and treated tap water; prayer plants are very sensitive to chlorine and excess minerals in their soil and the edges of the leaves will turn yellow and eventually brown and crispy if you use plain tap water. dry air will also cause the leaves to turn crispy
